Red, White & Blue Sangria

A Little Sangria History

The name Sangria comes from sangre, or blood, referring to its typically dark red colorEven though we typically think of Sangria as a Spanish drink, it can actually be traced back to the 18th century when Romans made their way through the Iberian Peninsula; planting vineyards. Since the drinking water was unsafe, it was common to fortify it with wine, spices and herbs.

While the true origins of Sangria can not be pinpointed exactly, early versions were popular in Spain, Greece, and England. Most food historians agree that some version of sangria was introduced to the Americas in the early 1800s and gained its popularity leading to today at the 1964 New York State Fair. (source)
